Alliance for MRI praises EU's MRI report

The Alliance for MRI is praising the European Parliament's approval of an amendment for MRI use in its draft report on the revised Directive on Protecting Workers from Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields, the Alliance said.

The approval of this amendment is in keeping with the political agreement reached by the European Brain Council and Parliament in April of this year, according to the Alliance.

The amendment is important because the exposure limits for workers in the proposed directive would have banned the use of MRI in areas such as MRI-guided surgery and for imaging vulnerable patients and children, where closer patient contact is required, the Alliance for MRI said. New research and developments in MRI also would have been severely restricted, as would routine cleaning and maintenance of MRI equipment.

Launched in 2007, the Alliance for MRI is a coalition of European Parliamentarians, patient groups, European scientists, and the medical community that seeks to avert the serious threat to the use of MRI posed by EU health and safety legislation.
