for August 1, Dr. Juergen Kammler and colleagues from General Hospital Linz in Austria assessed with CT the occurrence of coronary stent loss in 7,139 stent implantation procedures performed at their hospital between 1995 and 2004.

Free fat acids independently associated with cardiovascular mortality

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Aug 4 - Levels of free fat acids are associated with mortality in patients with coronary artery disease, Austrian and German researchers report. They examined data from 3,315 Caucasian subjects in an ongoing study of coronary artery disease. The patients were followed for a median of 5.38 years and all subjects underwent coronary angiography at baseline.

Sirolimus stents safe and effective for patients with restenosis

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Aug 1 - Sirolimus-eluting stent implantation appears to be safe and effective in restenosis patients originally treated with bare metal stents, Italian researchers report. In the 150 patients who completed follow-up angiography, restenosis was seen in 13 (8.7%). Lesion length was an angiographic independent predictor of restenosis.

Maternal hyperglycemia at conception linked to fetal cardiohypertrophy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Jul 26 - Fetuses of mothers with diabetes are prone to cardiac hypertrophy, which is worsened by poor glycemic control and is probably related to fetal hyperinsulinemia, investigators in London report. However, the ventricular hypertrophy seems to represent functional adaptation.
