NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Oct 23 - Dyssynchronized motion of the left ventricle is an independent risk factor for functional mitral valve regurgitation, Italian researchers report. In their study of 74 patients, tissue-derived Doppler-derived dyssynchrony index was measured according to time to peak systolic contraction of eight left ventricular segments supporting the papillary muscle.

Drug-eluting stents beneficial for treatment of acute MI

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Sep 14 - Drug-eluting stents, either coated with sirolimus or paclitaxel, are safe for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute MI with ST-segment elevation. In one study, at eight months, 170 patients underwent angiography. Uncoated stents were associated with significantly greater in-stent late luminal loss and in-stent restenosis.
