Dual-energy VC aims for noninvasive polyp evaluation
Dual-energy CT may find itself forging a new path in virtual colonoscopy by not only finding colorectal lesions but characterizing them in ways other noninvasive techniques cannot, according to a presentation at the International Society for Computed Tomography conference.

Nonlaxative PET/CT colonography is both feasible and effective
For individuals who need a highly accurate colon screening exam but can't tolerate a full bowel prep, nonlaxative PET/CT colonography may be just what the doctor ordered, according to a new study from the U.K. published this month in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

VC shows high diagnostic yield after failed colonoscopy
Virtual colonoscopy finds significant pathology in patients referred after failed colonoscopy, according to a study presented at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in New Orleans. The results show the need for a complete colon exam and highlight VC's strengths in detecting extracolonic abnormalities.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy of dubious value after VC
The yield of additional pathological findings was quite low in a group of symptomatic patients who underwent flexible sigmoidoscopy after virtual colonoscopy screening, according to a poster presentation at this week's Digestive Disease Week meeting in New Orleans.

Small colon polyps on VC suggest presence of larger lesions
Individuals with several diminutive colon polyps on virtual colonoscopy studies are far more likely than other screening subjects to also have a larger colorectal lesion, say researchers from the University of Munich in Germany.

Automated exposure control delivers uneven CT dose reduction
Reducing tube current may be a popular way to lower CT radiation dose, but it's not necessarily an effective one. In a new study, medical physicists from Greece found that organ dose reductions resulting from tube current modulation with automated exposure control can vary -- especially in children.

CT shows abdominal fat is unreliable Crohn's treatment target
A few reports have associated abdominal visceral fat with more aggressive forms of Crohn's disease, but the strength of the association -- and the implications for treatment -- remain unclear. Researchers from Ireland decided to try CT to resolve the issue.

Less DNA damage seen after high-pitch coronary CTA
High-pitch dual-source CT angiography (CTA) scans produce significantly less radiation-related DNA damage than comparable low-pitch dual-source CTA scans -- and, importantly, the DNA results correspond to both measured and derived biological radiation doses, say researchers from Erlangen, Germany.

Open-source software increases colon polyp conspicuity
Visibility of colon polyps is increased and sensitivity improved with the use of threshold-based color-coding software in virtual colonoscopy, according to a new study from Italy. Even flat lesions were more often visible with use of the open-source 2D-based interpretation software.

Cardiac cath delivers high radiation doses to operators
The rapid development of new cardiac stents and other medical devices is opening up a world of possibilities for interventional procedures in the cath lab -- but it's also exposing equipment operators to ever-higher radiation doses.

Unfilled vacancies and disparities persist in nuclear medicine
Dual PET imaging in Case Two illustrates a patient with discordant disease. FDG PET (b & d) shows FDG uptake in tail of pancreas primary lesion (yellow arrow), as well as multiple hepatic metastases (yellow boxes), with enlarged liver span. DOTATATE PET on left (a) shows several hepatic metastases that do not demonstrate DOTATATE uptake above background of liver parenchyma. The liver lesions in (c) demonstrate moderate FDG uptake in liver lesions, with no corresponding DOTATATE avidity (white box) or central photopenia (white arrow). This discordance in dual PET imaging corresponds to a NETPET score of 5. This suggests de-differentiated disease and a less favorable prognosis. The patient was not suitable for Lutate treatment and received chemotherapy.
