NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Oct 31 - Placental thickness is greater in women with primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection than in uninfected pregnant women, particularly in those women who give birth to infants with congenital disease, researchers report. CMV status was determined at baseline and ultrasound was performed regularly between 16 and 36 weeks' gestation.

Abortion seen not related to breast cancer risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Oct 16 - Induced abortion does not affect the risk of breast cancer, according to findings published in the October issue of the International Journal of Cancer. The researchers examined the role of spontaneous and induced abortion on breast cancer risk among 267,361 women enrolled in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition between 1992 and 2000.

Benign ovarian cysts linked to lower breast cancer risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Oct 16 - Benign ovarian cysts do not increase the risk of breast cancer, according to results of a meta-analysis of case-control studies conducted in Italy and Switzerland. In fact, benign cysts were associated with a 30% decreased risk of breast cancer, the investigators report.

Genetic mutation doubles breast cancer risk - study

The gene, called BRIP1, helps to repair damaged DNA -- like some of the other known breast cancer genes, researchers reported in this week's issue of the journal Nature Genetics.
