MRI optimizes photodynamic therapy efficacy
By
Tami Freeman, PhD
Photodynamic therapy uses a light-activated drug to create reactive oxygen species that kill nearby cancer cells, but its use is limited by the low penetration of light into tissue and insufficient accumulation of the photosensitizing drug in tumors. Russian researchers have devised an MRI-based method to overcome this hurdle.
