Screening for thyroid cancer worthwhile in some childhood cancer survivors
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Dec 29 - While ultrasound screening for thyroid cancer in the general population is not cost-effective and may lead to unnecessary surgery, it is worthwhile in childhood cancer survivors who received radiotherapy involving the head, neck, or upper thorax, according to Italian researchers.

Obese children risk thyroid damage
By
Reuters Health
WASHINGTON (Reuters), Dec 3 - Obese children may be damaging their thyroids, creating a vicious cycle of metabolism and overweight, Italian researchers reported on Wednesday. They evaluated 186 overweight and obese children for about three years, testing thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibodies and imaging the thyroid gland using ultrasound.

Normal heart function seen in most pediatric septic shock survivors
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Dec 3 - Most children who survive septic shock exhibit normal cardiac function, although a few patients will have rhythm disturbances and decreased ventricular function, according to Dutch researchers. They compared ECG and echocardiographic data from pediatric septic shock survivors and healthy control patients.

Swiss pediatric CT survey leads to national dose standards
By
Cynthia E. Keen
When a child needs a CT exam of the head, chest, or abdomen in Switzerland, pediatricians and parents can be assured that the radiation dose exposure will be identical regardless of the hospital. The country's success in standardizing pediatric CT dose could provide a model for similar efforts under way in the U.S.

MRI used to diagnose complex lung infections in children
By
Cynthia E. Keen
CT is the gold standard for lung imaging, particularly when a chest x-ray lacks the detail needed to make a diagnosis. But CT's far higher radiation dose -- equivalent to 200 chest radiographs -- has some pediatric radiologists looking for an alternative modality, especially for children with chronic lung conditions who may require many CT scans.

MRI aids in assessing risk of MS after first CNS demyelination episode
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Oct 10 - MRI criteria can help identify children with a first attack of inflammatory demyelination who are likely to go on to develop multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a report in the September 23 issue of
Neurology

MRI can provide safe imaging for pediatric heart patients
By
Wayne Forrest
Cardiovascular MRI can be performed safely, with low risk and limited hemodynamic changes, on infants with congenital heart disease, according to a study conducted at the Heart and Diabetes Center in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany.

Cardiac function normal in children with perinatal glucocorticoid exposure
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Aug 25 - Perinatal glucocorticoid therapy to reduce the incidence and severity of chronic lung disease in preterm infants does not appear to harm cardiac function in childhood, according to a retrospective Dutch study.

Early screening urged for children in families with HCM
By
Reuters Health

Lower tube voltage leads to reduced dose in pediatric CT
By
Brian Casey
SAN FRANCISCO - Radiation dose can be reduced in pediatric CT imaging without compromising image quality by using lower tube voltages, according to CT pioneer Willi Kalender, Ph.D. Dose could potentially be reduced even further if manufacturers tweaked their systems to enable them to scan at lower energies than those commonly used now, he said at yesterday's sessions of Stanford University's International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.
