Obese children risk thyroid damage

WASHINGTON (Reuters), Dec 3 - Obese children may be damaging their thyroids, creating a vicious cycle of metabolism and overweight, Italian researchers reported on Wednesday. They evaluated 186 overweight and obese children for about three years, testing thyroid hormone levels and thyroid antibodies and imaging the thyroid gland using ultrasound.

Using SPECT, researchers in France have detected functional abnormalities in certain regions of the brain in fibromyalgia patients. The findings support the idea that fibromyalgia symptoms are related to a dysfunction in the parts of the brain where pain is processed.

Eating fish may thwart 'silent' brain damage

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Aug 5 - Older adults who regularly eat fish may have a lower risk of subtle brain damage that contributes to stroke and dementia, researchers report. In a study of 3,660 adults age 65 and older, Finnish researchers found that those who ate more fish were less likely to show certain "silent" brain infarcts on MRI.
