PACS data-mining tool analyzes CR retake rates
By
Brian Casey
Researchers from Spain have developed software that analyzes PACS data to automatically perform quality control analysis of retake rates of computed radiography studies. They believe their QC tool could make it easier for imaging facilities to reduce retakes and improve the overall quality of service.

Image tools cut false positives in unprepped VC
By
Eric Barnes
Aiming to optimize the results of prepless vitual colonoscopy, researchers have developed a pair of tools to process unprepped CT data and make it easier to read. According to the results of a pilot study, the methods reduced false positives by as much as one-third.

Italian colon study to use CAD as primary reader
By
AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writers
A province in Italy is launching a new research project to screen residents for colon cancer using virtual colonoscopy and computer-aided detection software as a primary reader.

FOBT-screened cohort yields too many positives for VC
By
Eric Barnes
Virtual colonoscopy (VC) seems a promising way to sort through patients with a positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT), considering the latter's demonstrated low sensitivity and high false-positive rate. But in a screening cohort from the Netherlands, polyps and cancer were so common in FOBT patients that VC hardly seemed worth it.

Higher VC laxative dose burdens patients, doesn't improve reads
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers from the Netherlands report that higher levels of catharsis conferred neither better image quality nor improvement of tagging characteristics on image data, compared to images from subjects given lower laxative doses.

Capsule endoscopy image quality not improved with oral bowel prep
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Jul 9 - In patients with obscure GI bleeding undergoing exploration of the small bowel by capsule endoscopy, image quality is not improved by bowel preparation with oral sodium phosphate (NaP) rather than fasting, study results indicate.

Poor go through with colon screening less often
By
AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writers
Despite the best intentions, many people don't follow through with screening exams even though they understand their value. The phenomenon can be more pronounced among those who are poor or in poor health, according to U.K. researchers.

Radiographers perform VC with CAD -- and controversy
By
Eric Barnes
A new study from London put radiographers in charge of reading virtual colonoscopy (VC) data, with their performance monitored with computer-aided detection as a second reader. The study raises the question of whether it's inappropriate -- or even dangerous -- to allow nonradiologists to screen with VC.

Similar outcomes for patients after laparoscopic and open colorectal cancer resection
By
Reuters Health
NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Jun 6 - Laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection and open colectomy provide similar long-term patient outcomes, according to a report in the
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
.

VC radiation dose holds steady overall despite dose modulation
By
Eric Barnes
The radiation dose from virtual colonoscopy (VC) hasn't dropped much since the introduction of dose modulation software on CT scanners, largely because VC providers use it only half the time, according to a new study from the Netherlands, which also demonstrated significantly lower doses for VC screening protocols compared to daily practice protocols.

MRI outperforms MDCT in endoleak detection
By
Wayne Forrest
Multidetector-row CT may soon find itself in competition with MRI for the imaging of endoleaks after endovascular repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms. Researchers found that MRI combined with a high relaxivity contrast agent had "significantly high sensitivity" for endoleak detection after EVAR when compared with MDCT.
