European women's health market will grow into 2017

The European women's health market is valued at more than 654 million euros ($917 million U.S.) and is estimated to grow to 784 million euros ($1.1 billion U.S.) by 2017, according to a new report by market research firm iData Research.

The study attributed the expected growth to the recovery of the digital breast mammography, ob/gyn ultrasound imaging, and female sterilization segments.

In addition, the implementation of national breast screening programs in Europe should counteract the negative effects of the global economic crisis and result in double-digit growth of the European digital mammography market by 2017.

The report also found GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare, and Hologic were the leading companies in the digital breast imaging, mammography, and ob/gyn ultrasound market last year.

In particular, ob/gyn ultrasound accounted for more than one-quarter of the total European women's health market last year and will continue to grow due to technological advances from GE, Siemens, and Philips Healthcare, such as 3D/4D real-time imaging.
