Smits: Success in AI rests on teamwork and data sharing

By Philip Ward, AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writer

April 20, 2021 -- Successful implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) hinges on a well-coordinated multidisciplinary approach and effective data sharing, says Prof. Dr. Marion Smits, PhD, winner of the 2021 EuroMinnies award for Most Influential Radiology Researcher.

Smits is chief of neuroradiology and chair of the neuroradiology fellowship program at Erasmus MC -- University Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands. She is chair of the Publications Committee and Executive Council member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), chair of the Dutch Society of Neuroradiology, and chair of the Brain Tumour Group Imaging Committee of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

In a video interview, she also reflects on the 80:20 male to female split on the ESR board of directors, her personal website, and best use of social media.

Smits has written an important article on AI for the current edition of MemoRad (page 21, available in Dutch only), the newsletter of the Dutch Society of Radiology, the NVvR. You can also read more about her research activities on her personal website.

Further interviews with the winners of the 2021 EuroMinnies award scheme will follow during the rest of April. Now in its third year, the scheme is an annual event recognizing excellence in radiology. Candidates are nominated by AuntMinnieEurope.com members, with winners selected by an expert panel in two rounds of voting. A full list of winners in the 2021 edition of the EuroMinnies is available on AuntMinnieEurope.com.
