Digital mammo with CAD requires sharp eye for false negatives

In the past few years, traditional film-screen and digital mammography has benefited by the application of computer-aided detection (CAD) software. Although studies have shown that CAD use can increase the detection of early-stage malignancies, radiologist experience is needed to reduce the number of false negatives to a minimum, according to researchers from Italy.

Presentations at the two days of special sessions on CAD at the 2005 Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) meeting revealed that discovery and utilization are just the tip of the iceberg of possibilities.
