CARS report: New CAD tool follows lung nodules over time
By
Eric Barnes
BERLIN - It's easy to complain about the insanity of tracking lung nodule changes in multiple CT scans over time, but at least one group is doing something about it, according to a presentation at the Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) meeting.

Readers undaunted by VC CAD false positives
By
Eric Barnes
Radiologists examining data from virtual colonoscopy studies can easily dismiss increasing numbers of false-positive detections generated by computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, researchers from the U.K. report. But the presence of more false positives makes reading less efficient.

Virtual colonoscopy CAD improves flat-lesion detection
By
Eric Barnes
Computer-aided detection (CAD) software can improve the detection of flat lesions at virtual colonoscopy -- as long as the lesions are at least 1 mm high. In a new study from Italy, CAD detected 94% of all flat lesions; however, radiologists dismissed a few of them incorrectly as false positives.

Two lung CAD systems unaffected by low dose
By
Eric Barnes
A face-off between two lung nodule computer-aided detection (CAD) systems found a big difference in sensitivity for detecting solid pulmonary nodules, but it also revealed the good news that nodule detection was unaffected by low-dose scanning. The number of false positives also differed significantly between the two systems, researchers from Germany reported.

VC CAD plus 3D improves sensitivity for novice readers
By
Eric Barnes
Computer-aided detection (CAD) with 3D viewing improves sensitivity for polyp detection among less experienced readers, and may also speed up reading times and reduce false-positive detections. On the other hand, the performance of experienced readers did not improve significantly with CAD use, researchers from the University of Rome concluded.

Virtual colonoscopy CAD finds most cancers
By
Eric Barnes
A computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithm designed to find polypoid lesions of the colon also does fairly well at finding frank cancers, researchers from the U.K. concluded. But sensitivity varies depending on the system settings and the quality of the prep.

CAD performance changes with breast density
By
Brian Casey
Changes in breast density can affect the performance of computer-aided detection (CAD) software used to analyze mammography images, according to results of a study from Spain presented at the European Congress of Radiology.

Mammography CAD recalls baffle CADET II researchers
By
Brian Casey
Why do radiologists reviewing mammograms accept some prompts made by computer-aided detection (CAD) software, while others are rejected? Even researchers from one of Europe's most prominent CAD studies aren't sure, according to research presented at this month's European Congress of Radiology.

Integrating lung CAD with PACS boosts utilization
By
Erik L. Ridley
VIENNA - Integrating computer-aided detection (CAD) technology into PACS workstations can dramatically boost its usage for detecting pulmonary nodules on MDCT studies, according to research from the University of Munich in Germany.
