CT, MRI look at different etiologies for myocardial fat
New studies appearing in Radiology online examine two different etiologies associated with myocardial fat deposits. Their presence on imaging studies, both in CT and MRI, can help radiologists evaluate the extent of disease and potential risks.

VC researchers weigh 3 iodine tagging regimens
A laxative-and-tagging regimen consisting of iodinated contrast plus a sodium phosphate mixture showed the best cleansing results among three concoctions in preparing for virtual colonoscopy exams. But a two-day regimen of iodinated contrast and a mild laxative at mealtime was better accepted by patients, according to a new study from Italy.

Most choose VC over colonoscopy, study shows
A new study from the Netherlands has found that most patients preferred reduced-prep virtual colonoscopy over conventional optical colonoscopy. Patients judged reduced-prep VC, both prep and procedure, as less burdensome, a fact the researchers hope could lead to greater compliance in colorectal cancer screening.

Brazilian team marries lung CAD with PACS
Nearly all computer-aided detection (CAD) systems in clinical use today have a major shortcoming: the need to transfer image data to a separate workstation to run CAD software, with CAD data remaining separate from the PACS images radiologists read in their normal workflow. Researchers from São Paulo may have the answer.

Dual-source coronary CTA has advantages over 64-slice
Even in patients with well-controlled heart rates, dual-source coronary CT angiography (CTA) delivers significantly higher specificity and accuracy per coronary segment compared to 64-detector-row CTA, concludes a new study from Switzerland.

Lower-kilovoltage coronary CTA maintains image quality
In a study that included all but the heaviest cardiac imaging patients, European and Japanese researchers were able to cut radiation dose by 31% in coronary CT angiography (CTA) studies by reducing the kilovoltage from 120 kV to 100 kV, with no difference in image quality.

Sophisticated electronic bowel cleansing boosts polyp detection
A new suite of investigational image-processing tools known as structure-analysis cleansing is improving the results of virtual colonoscopy scans performed after limited bowel preparation. The goal is to make virtual colonoscopy easier on patients and persuade them to get screened for colorectal cancer.

Mirai shows promise for detecting interval breast cancers
The AI risk prediction model Mirai has shown promise for detecting interval breast cancers from screening mammograms, U.K. researchers have reported.
Sequences included in the study MRI protocol: (a) coronal TIRM (turbo inversion recovery magnitude) sequence, (b) coronal T1-weighted sequence, (c) axial FLAIR (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) sequence (head only), (d) axial T2-weighted fast spin-echo sequence (HASTE), (e) axial diffusion-weighted imaging (b-value 900), (f) an axial ADC map, (g) axial T1-Dixon water-only images before contrast agent, and (h) after administration of contrast agent.
