Additional double reading of screening mammograms boosts accuracy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Jul 26 - Double reading of mammograms by radiologic technologists in addition to double reading by radiologists -- i.e., quadruple reading -- can improve breast cancer detection without substantially increasing referral rates, Dutch researchers report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute for August 1st.

British medics worried by lack of dead bodies

LONDON (Reuters), Jul 18 - Many medical schools in Britain now use pro-sections -- prepared body part samples which have been predissected by a tutor and which the students are allowed to examine. Increasingly few get hands-on experience of proper dissection. The problem, in part, is that there simply aren't enough bodies to go around. According to medical authorities, Britain needs around 1,000 bodies a year for use in training medical students and conducting scientific research.

Living near busy road may promote atherosclerosis

NEW YORK (Reuters Health), Jul 17 - The closer a person lives to heavy traffic, the more likely he or she is to have atherosclerosis, also referred to as "hardening of the arteries," a chief risk factor for heart disease and stroke, German researchers report. While several studies have linked air pollution with particulate matter to a greater risk of heart attack, there is little evidence on whether this is due to short- or long-term exposure, the team notes in the journal, Circulation.

Breast cancer target 'failing patients' in U.K.

LONDON (Reuters), Jul 13 - An increasing number of women with breast cancer are waiting too long to see a specialist doctor because of problems caused by a government target, research published on Friday said. Under NHS guidelines introduced in 1999, all patients with suspected breast cancer should be seen by an expert within two weeks of being referred by a general practitioner in a bid to cut long waiting lists and delays in treatment

Germany worried about excess use of CT scans

BERLIN (Reuters), Jul 12 - Germans with no real health problems are needlessly taking in heavy doses of radiation because of an alarming increase in the use of computerized body scanning, the country's environment minister said, according to a study by Deutsche Bank published last year. Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection wants a critical study of the situation and a halt to unnecessary CT scans, said German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel.
