3D modeling progresses in structural heart disease
November 17, 2017 -- A 3D image reconstruction technique can combine functional and anatomical heart data, enabling practical descriptions of scarred tissue from cardiac anomalies revealed by electrocardiography, according to research presented at the recent European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology in Milan.  Discuss
ABVS rivals MRI in predicting small breast lesions
November 17, 2017 -- Automated breast volume scanning (ABVS) performs better than ultrasound and MRI in predicting breast cancer size for lesions smaller than 2 cm, and it is comparable for lesions of all other sizes, according to Italian researchers.  Discuss
GBCA study contradicts past gadolinium retention results
November 16, 2017 -- In results they described as "unexpected" and "controversial," Norwegian researchers found levels of residual signal enhancement in the brains of 17 patients who were given a macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA), with the highest levels found in two patients who received the most doses, according to a paper in the November issue of Radiology.  Discuss
Nodule count on CT not linked to lung cancer risk
November 15, 2017 -- Does a higher number of lung nodules detected on baseline CT screens indicate an increased risk of cancer? Researchers with the Dutch-Belgian Randomized Lung Cancer Screening trial refute this notion in a study published in the November issue of Lung Cancer.  Discuss
Quality: How teleradiology firms can make a difference
November 15, 2017 -- Around 40% of radiologists in the U.K. National Health Service (NHS) are not having their reporting checked, and this is one of the greatest weaknesses of NHS radiology when it comes to quality, a leading teleradiologist told delegates at this month's British Institute of Radiology annual congress.  Discuss
Fresh row develops over breast screening in France
November 14, 2017 -- Breast cancer screening critics are at it again -- this time zeroing in on France. A multinational team has praised changes to breast cancer screening that alter the existing program, such as giving women more information on overdiagnosis, but breast cancer screening advocates strongly disagree, believing that the magnitude of overdiagnosis has been exaggerated.  Discuss
MRI becomes safer for patients with heart-valve prosthesis
November 13, 2017 -- Evidence about the use of MRI in patients with a heart-valve prosthesis remains inconclusive, but the latest data support the hypothesis of a low or negligible interaction with MRI, according to research from the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology congress in Milan.  Discuss
Functional MRI sheds new light on sound and touch
November 10, 2017 -- Researchers in the U.S. and the Netherlands have observed auditory responses in the human somatosensory cortex, a region of the brain usually dedicated to processing touch. They measured functional MRI signal changes following a frequency discrimination task.  Discuss
How accurate is CT radiation dose info on the internet?
November 9, 2017 -- The internet often harbors inaccurate information regarding CT radiation dose, with online media outlets aimed at the lay public leading the way, according to a new Irish study.  Discuss
Ultralow-dose CT probes presurgical stroke risk
November 8, 2017 -- The danger of stroke as a cardiac postsurgery complication has flagged the need for greater understanding of patients' calcified atherosclerotic burden prior to surgery. But just how much dose is needed for CT results to be accurate, and how can radiologists optimize visualization?  Discuss
