Hitachi secures ultrasound deal in London

Hitachi Medical Systems Europe has won a contract to provide six ultrasound scanners to three hospital groups in London.

Hitachi will supply six of its high-resolution Arietta scanners, outfitted with the BiopSee image-guided prostate biopsy device from MedCom. The products combine multiparametric MRI scanning with real-time ultrasound needle guidance for highly accurate prostate biopsy, according to the company.

The contract was made as part of the Rapid Assessment Prostate Imaging and Diagnosis (RAPID) program, which is designed to accelerate research into a "one-stop shop" for prostate cancer diagnosis by providing multiparametric MRI with ultrasound and biopsy on the same day. The approach is designed to reduce unnecessary biopsy.

The three groups piloting RAPID are the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals National Health Service (NHS) Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
