Since 2014, more than 200 MRI scans have had to be canceled at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in the U.K. due to obese patients not being able to fit into the MRI scanner, forcing the health board to add a mobile scanner to deal with this problem, according to a BBC News article published on 3 April.
The British Dietetics Association noted the size of imaging equipment isn't growing in line with obesity rates, while Society of Radiographers Chief Executive Richard Evans said growing waistlines are inconveniencing patient waiting lists and adding costs to the National Health Service, BBC News reported. Furthermore, some health boards have been forced to buy larger scanners or send patients to out-of-area hospitals for MRI examinations.
