BBC: Radiologist training site to open in Wales

The U.K. government has announced plans for a new training academy for radiologists, to be based in Pencoed, Wales, according to a BBC news article.

The academy will be created with funding of 3.4 million pounds (3.9 million euros) from the Welsh government, and it is expected to be in operation by the middle of 2018, according to the BBC. The academy is expected to increase the number of trained radiologists and provide specialist training with consultant radiologists from South Wales conducting seminars and supervision for trainees.

Over the last five years, Wales has increased the number of its radiologists to 160 currently, an increase of 9%, according to the article. The number of trainee radiologists in Wales has risen to 43, but the region has a higher percentage of older radiologists -- 42% older than age 50 -- than the rest of the U.K.

The BBC also noted that the Welsh government has committed to spend 16 million pounds (18.3 million euros) on medical imaging equipment at hospitals.
