The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is mourning the loss of the Chinese pioneer Prof. Guozhen Li, who died on 27 November at the age of 107.

Li earned her medical degree from Union Medical College in Beijing and completed advanced study at the University of Chicago Hospital. She devoted her life to the development of radiology in China, spearheading the purchase and installation of CT scanners at Beijing Hospital in 1978 and in the 1990s, encouraging education and use of MRI.

Starting in 1984, she served as editor in chief of the Chinese Journal of Radiology, and in 1985, she published the book Clinical Body CT Diagnosis, which became a primary CT imaging reference; the second edition of this work was published in 1994.

Li also served as vice director of the Chinese Society of Radiology and honorary president of the Chinese Association of Medical Imaging Technology. In 1998, she was awarded honorary membership in the RSNA and in 2001 membership in the ESR.

"She will be sorely missed by the European radiology community," the ESR said in a statement.
