ESR, EFRS address patient safety issues in radiology

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) have released a joint statement addressing key safety issues in the provision of radiology services. The statement was published online on 5 April in Insights into Imaging.

The statement discusses potential health risks associated with radiological modalities, techniques, and procedures from the perspective of European radiographers and radiologists. The societies focus on notable safety issues in radiology, including direct results of radiation exposure, harms linked to the use of drugs and contrast agents, and potential lapses in patient data protection and communication.

In addition, the statement provides relevant guidelines and references for radiologists and radiologic technologists in light of the mandate that these professionals are to make all possible efforts to ensure patients are not worse off after treatment than before.
