The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) is lauding Cancer Research UK's new report on improving cancer care for older people.
The report, called "Advancing care, Advancing Years: Treating and Caring for an Ageing Population," was written via a collaboration between the University of Birmingham's Health Services Management Centre and consulting and technology services company ICF International.
The document makes it clear the cancer care community needs more support so the needs of older patients are met, Dr. Frances Yuille, medical director for education and training in clinical oncology, said in a statement released by the RCR.
"It is vital that oncology consultants give these patients, who often have multiple health and care considerations, the attention and understanding they deserve, and that treatment is tailored to patients' best interests and wishes," he said.
The RCR "actively works with all medical specialties and emphasizes geriatric oncology assessment methods and care in our education and training," Yuille said, and is "committed to ensuring trainees and specialist consultants in imaging and clinical oncology are well-trained in considering the needs of older patients."
