U.K. hospital now using rectal gel for prostate treatment

A U.K. hospital has begun using a gel that reduces radiation to the rectum during prostate brachytherapy treatment.

St. Luke's Cancer Centre, which is part of the Royal Surrey County Hospital National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, has begun using SpaceOAR, a hydrogel that is placed between the prostate and the rectum under ultrasound guidance. The gel is made by Oncology Systems Limited of Shrewsbury, U.K., and helps limit risk of radiation to the rectum during radiotherapy, the hospital said.
