U.K. announces updates for consensus statements on bladder cancer

May 25, 2023 -- The U.K. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has announced it is updating its consensus statements on bladder cancer. The new document is due to be published later this year.

The college said the title for these recommendations is "Radiotherapy Dose Fractionation Third Edition [and Fourth Edition] and Timely Delivery of Radical Radiotherapy: guidelines for the management of unscheduled treatment interruptions." These are both currently under review.

The consensus statements will cover several areas in bladder cancer treatment, include pathway and follow-up, node-positive disease, and variant pathology among others.

The RCR said the consensus process was developed in 2016 to reduce variation in radiotherapy practice within the U.K. While the new guidelines are in the review process, the college said that radiologists should refer to the Bladder Consensus Statements for the latest guidance on radical and palliative fractionation schedules for bladder cancer, as well as how treatment interruptions should be managed in the bladder cancer patient.

The next review of consensus statements will take place in 2027.
