In its statement from 12 March, the RCR underscored that current evidence has yet to demonstrate that CT delivers clear benefits in terms of positive management change. CT findings alone are insufficient to obviate the need for laboratory testing.
Though CT is a well-established diagnostic tool for severe respiratory distress, radiologists should not differ their approach in using the modality for individuals with or suspected of having coronavirus infection, the RCR said. However, it is important for radiologists to be familiar with the CT features of COVID-19, since individuals with the disease may undergo CT for other reasons.
The RCR noted that this advice is subject to change over the coming days and weeks as the situation evolves.
