November 14, 2022 -- The RSNA has bestowed its 2022 Alexander R. Margulis Award for Scientific Excellence on an artificial intelligence (AI) study that shows how an algorithm can improve the detection of trauma fractures on x-ray.

Study lead author Dr. Ali Guermazi of Boston University will accept the award. The article, "Improving Radiographic Fracture Recognition Performance and Efficiency Using Artificial Intelligence," was published in the March issue of Radiology.

In the study, Guermazi and colleagues evaluated a model developed by Gleamer.ai based on a dataset of 60,170 radiographs of patients with trauma from 22 institutions. They found that the algorithm improved fracture detection by radiologists and six other types of readers by 10.4% and cut reading time by 6.3 seconds per patient.

Named for Dr. Alexander R. Margulis, the annual award recognizes the best original scientific article published in RSNA's flagship journal, Radiology.
