Report forecasts continued DR growth as CR declines

A new market report by Frost & Sullivan predicts that revenues in the digital radiography (DR) market in Europe will grow as the saturated computed radiography (CR) segment continues to decline.

Revenues in the European DR segment totaled 119 million euros in 2014, and will rise to about 185 million euros in 2019. At the same time, CR revenues were predicted to fall from 106 million euros in 2014 to 79 million euros in 2019.

The changes are being driven by large patient volumes and shrinking resources, which have created the need for more efficient workflow options in the European healthcare industry, the report stated.

In the next couple years, replacement demand alone will sustain the market, the report added. Going forward, cost-effective innovation will be essential in order for providers to remain financially viable. DR systems packaged with PACS and other options may gain an advantage in this environment, suggesting better returns for companies with more diverse product portfolios.

Adding new technologies such as portable and wireless systems and interoperable point-of-care technologies can also provide advantages for manufacturers, the report stated.
