EANM announces passing of breast pioneer Dr. Umberto Veronesi

The European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) announced the passing of Dr. Umberto Veronesi on 8 November, in his home in Milan. He was 91.

Veronesi served as the scientific director of the National Cancer Institute in Milan where he helped develop the conservative treatment of breast cancer. He also helped pioneer the sentinel node biopsy procedure.

During his career, Veronesi founded the European School of Oncology (ESO) and the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). He contributed to the establishment of the Federation of European Cancer Societies (FECS) and served as president from 1981 to 1983 and from 1991 to 1993.

"We have lost a clinician, a scientist, a mentor, and a great human being," said President Dr. Arturo Chiti in a statement released by EANM.
