EUSOBI to launch breast cancer plan at annual meeting

The European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) plans to highlight a 5-point plan for breast cancer at its annual meeting in Paris.

The EUSOBI plan includes the following points:

  1. In Europe, there are slightly different breast screening protocols in every country. But all agree that mammography saves lives and life quality, and can decrease breast cancer death by up to 40%.
  2. Because one in five breast cancers occur in women younger than 50, screening should start before this age, at least at 45.
  3. 45% of breast cancers and related deaths occur in women ages 65 and older. One in three breast cancers occur in women older than 70, so screening should not stop at this age, but continue at least up to 75.
  4. If a woman has breast symptoms, she should consult with a breast radiologist, who can impart the most accurate breast health information.
  5. A woman's risk profile matters, and personalized screening protocols may include ultrasound and/or MRI. These additional exams should always be interpreted along with mammography.

EUSOBI expects more than 600 participants at this year's meeting, which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of contrast-enhanced breast MRI and will feature presentations from researchers from 29 countries in the EUSOBI National Societies Network.
