Armenia gets 3D digital mammo units
By AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writers

May 18, 2012 -- The Armenian American Cultural Association (AACA) has installed a 3D digital mammography system from women's imaging vendor Hologic at the Armenian American Wellness Center in Yerevan, Armenia.

AACA bought two 3D mammography systems, according to the Armenian Mirror-Spectator. The systems were purchased thanks to grassroots donors and family foundations from the community, as well as grants received from USAID.

Fifteen years ago, there wasn't a single mammography machine in the country, according to the newspaper. The first two analog mammography units were installed in Armenia in 1997. In 2009 and 2010 these two machines were upgraded into three advanced analog systems, and this year in March, they were replaced with the latest 3D digital models, according to the newspaper.

Since 1997, close to 200,000 patients have visited the Wellness Center and of these, more than 125,000 have been screened by the radiology department, the center said. Screening has resulted in more than 3,000 lives saved through early detection. Of the more than 2,500 patients who visit each month, nearly 1,500 are women who come for their annual mammograms, the Armenian Mirror-Spectator reported.
