To coincide with the International Day of Radiology (IDoR) on 8 November, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) has published a new book, Screening & Beyond: Medical Imaging in the Detection, Diagnosis and Management of Breast Diseases, in cooperation with the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI).

The aim of the book is to inform the general public about the latest developments in breast imaging and the benefits of screening, as well as provide an overview of the modalities and technologies used in breast imaging today. To download a copy of the book, click here.

Breast imaging will be the focus of IDoR 2016, and many activities are being planned by societies, institutions, and individuals worldwide. ESR has also conducted interviews with experts in breast imaging from 16 European countries, and with specialists from Australia, Latin America, South Africa, and the U.S., providing an overview of the status quo of screening and treatments in these regions.

"Mammography is a fast, widely available, accurate, cheap, and acceptably harmful method for diagnosis and screening of breast cancer," stated Dr. Boris Brkljačić, professor of radiology and chair of the ESR Communications and External Affairs Committee, who is a specialist in breast imaging and closely involved in the EuroSafe Imaging campaign. "The benefit of early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer far outweighs the risk of the small amount of radiation received during a screening mammogram."

IDoR is an initiative of the ESR, the American College of Radiology (ACR), and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Last year more than 140 radiology-related professional societies from around the world took part in the celebration.
