IAEA seeks to raise awareness of pregnancy risks

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has published a new poster that aims to build awareness of x-ray or nuclear medicine procedures among women who are or might be pregnant.

The poster is intended to be used by medical facilities for the purpose of the International Basic Safety Standards, which requires registrants and licensees to ensure that "signs in appropriate languages are placed in public places, waiting rooms for patients, cubicles, and other appropriate places, to request female patients who are to undergo a radiological procedure to notify the radiological medical practitioner, medical radiation technologist, or other personnel in the event that she is or might be pregnant," according to the IAEA.

The agency said that health professionals are welcome to download the poster and display it in appropriate places in medical radiological facilities. It can also be translated into other languages by emailing the IAEA.
