Philips releases healthcare leadership survey at HIMSS

Philips Healthcare parent Royal Philips released the results of a healthcare leadership survey at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2015 annual meeting in Chicago.

Conducted by HIMSS Media on behalf of Philips, the survey -- called "Healthcare IT's Evolving Role: Driving Clinical and Financial Improvement" -- asked 121 healthcare IT leaders how they are currently prioritizing technology investment and adoption to address reform initiatives, Philips said.

Of the 121 respondents, 88% represent either standalone hospitals or integrated delivery networks (IDNs). More than 40% are in executive-level positions, with the predominant position being chief information officer (CIO), and another 33% are IT directors and managers.

Survey results include the following:

  • Seventy-three percent of hospitals and IDNs are investing in new technologies to enhance the value of existing systems.
  • The majority of investment is going into enhancing existing electronic medical records (EMRs) with new capabilities or modules; however, installing mobile devices (60%), using telehealth technology (58%), and using remote monitoring (38%) also saw investment growth compared with 2014.
  • Respondents ranked patient health information security as most important (26%), followed by acceptance of new technology adoption by clinical users (24%) and technology to optimize reimbursement through meaningful use (22%).
  • The most popular external IT uses were physician offices (91%), ambulatory surgery centers (47%), urgent care centers (45%), diagnostic imaging centers (43%), patient homes (42%), and emergency medical services (26%).
