Austrian radiologists push ahead with search engine

Researchers at Vienna Medical University are developing a search engine that enables radiologists presented with obscure clinical abnormalities to locate similar cases in a database and compare them with the new findings.

The project is an auxiliary tool for improving diagnosis, said Dr. George Langs from the university's department of radiology and nuclear medicine, which is working in tandem with Dr. Franz Kainberger in the university's computational imaging research laboratory.

The project was dubbed KHRESMOI at CeBIT, a trade fair for information technology held in Hannover, Germany. Recently, Vienna researchers have focused on creating intelligent search algorithms that can find similarities using pattern recognition in large image databases. To aid research in developing the system, they are currently engaged in inputting the anonymized findings of radiological examinations of the Vienna General, according to the university.

The eventual goal is to develop a search engine for a larger audience within the framework of the project to use as a platform for public health with high peer-reviewed and relevant content for private users and their requests. The project brings together 12 partners from Europe specializing in linguistics and computer-based image processing.
