Atos set to play role in AAA screening program
By AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writers

August 6, 2012 -- A new national screening program being rolled out in Scotland aims to screen all men age 65 years and older for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

National Health Service (NHS) Scotland has chosen IT services company Atos, working with Image Information Systems, to bring the project to fruition, Atos said. The aim of the program is to significantly reduce mortality across the male population.

The AAA IT system went live on 25 June 2012, and will be rolled out over 10 years, Atos said. Image Information Systems developed a vascular diagnostic system to provide a solution for storing, viewing, distributing, and reporting on DICOM medical images. The IT system includes call/recall, clinic, alerts, organizational, participant, and letter management, as well as electronic referrals to vascular services and standardized auditing, among other features, the firm said.

The Atos and Image Information System's IT solution will be used by NHS Scotland staff throughout the screening process, Atos said. The iQ vascular screening system automatically detects measurements in DICOM data and passes them on to the screening management system. Images are stored in a central Web-based server. Procedures will be performed both in dedicated centers and mobile screening units, the companies said.
