BIR issues positive response to teleradiology standards

The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) welcomes the updated teleradiology standards released by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) at the end of 2016, the institute said.

Standards for the Provision of Teleradiology Within the United Kingdom revises guidelines previously issued in 2010, and offers guidance on data transfer, reporting, communications, and quality assurance.

"With the current shortage of radiologists, teleradiology is increasingly relied on for production of primary report, expert second opinion, or clinical review," noted the BIR in a statement. "Teleradiology must have the same level of governance and quality control as regular image reporting."
