LONDON - Know your sports, have eyes in the back of your head, and expect the unexpected. That's what it takes to deliver a successful radiology service at the Olympics, says Dr. Phil O'Connor, imaging lead at London 2012.

At Friday's workshop in London, On the road to Rio: Hot topics in sports imaging, he gave some practical tips for the organizers of the 2016 Games, which are due to begin on 5 August. Dr. O'Connor is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the U.K. The workshop was organized by the British Institute of Radiology in collaboration with AuntMinnieEurope.com.

Olympic radiologists and radiographers must be prepared to perform up to 60 MR scans a day, plus ultrasound, x-ray, and CT exams, and work under extreme pressures, O'Connor told Philip Ward, editor in chief of AuntMinnieEurope.com, in this video interview.

Over the next week or so, we will post two further interviews conducted at the London event. They will focus on how the 2012 Olympics transformed the life of a young U.K. radiologist and on a top radiologist's experiences of professional football injuries.
