NTP temporarily halts Mo-99 production

NTP Radioisotopes was forced to temporarily halt production of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) earlier this month after a minor operational incident at its manufacturing facility in South Africa.

In a July 23 letter to its customers, NTP said the incident has been "thoroughly investigated, corrective actions identified, and the required submission made to regulatory authorities."

In light of the shutdown, NTP moved up its scheduled two-week window of downtime for maintenance on its Safari-1 reactor, which was originally scheduled for August 8 through August 20. That work currently is underway.

Pending regulatory approval, NTP hopes to restart the reactor on August 1, with a regular supply of Mo-99 to commence on August 5.
