IBA launches updated Synthera radiochemistry unit

Proton therapy developer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) has launched a redesigned version of its Synthera radiochemistry module at the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain.

The Synthera platform has been on the market for more than 10 years with over 500 units installed worldwide. Synthera+ is a compact module that fits three synthesizers into a standard hot cell. Synthera+ and Synthera+ HPLC have both been fully redesigned to meet the production schedule of different radiotracers without opening the hot cell, translating into less intervention and more safety, IBA said.

Synthera+ can be equipped with a disposable production cassette dispenser, which can stack up to four cassettes. This allows it to perform consecutive runs of different compounds without opening the hot cell, resulting in nearly zero radiation exposure to the operator, the firm said.

The company is also touting the performance of its Cyclone KIUBE PET cyclotron. With the system, radiopharmacies will be able to produce up to 300 FDG doses in a two-hour run, which is in line with the market trend for higher production in one run, or they can use a faster production time for the same quantity, IBA said. The beam current of Cyclone KIUBE can reach up to 300 ยตA, leading to greater capacity for shorter runs and to increased profitability.

The cyclotron's production capacity can be increased to reach 30 Ci (1110 GBq) of F-18 in a two-hour run.
