October 19, 2011 -- Siemens Healthcare has delivered the first Biograph mMR PET/MRI scanner sold in the U.K. to the new University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre under construction in London.
When the cancer center opens in spring 2012, it will be used to treat patients 60% of the time. Forty percent of its use will be allocated for research projects.
Biograph mMR combines the functionality of MR and PET in a single modality that is the size of a standard 3-tesla MRI scanner. It acquires functional MR details in human tissue and PET cellular activity in a simultaneous procedure. The combined capabilities are expected to reduce radiation dose exposure of pediatric patients, according to Wendy Waddington, PhD, head of clinical medical physics at University College London Hospitals National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust.
