DRK: MDCT assists in planning of appendicitis surgery

Multidetector CT (MDCT) can help surgeons plan appendicitis treatment, according to research presented at the 95th German Radiology Congress (DRK) in Hamburg.

Dr. Murat Karul and colleagues from the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf conducted a study that included 76 patients with confirmed appendicitis who underwent MDCT with contrast prior to surgery to evaluate the extent of the inflammation. Twenty-two patients (28.9%) had severe appendicitis, 49 (64.5%) had mild appendicitis, and five (6.6%) had moderate disease.

MDCT's sensitivity for acute appendicitis was 86.4% and 85.7% in patients with mild appendicitis, the researchers found.
