ESR launches diagnostic reference levels project

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) has initiated the European Study on Clinical Diagnostic Reference Levels for X-ray Medical Imaging (EUCLID), a 33-month European Commission (EC) tender project that will provide up-to-date clinical diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in Europe.

In 1999, the commission issued the Radiation Protection 109 (RP 109) publication guidance on diagnostic reference levels DRLs for medical exposure, but that document does not provide examples of DRLs for CT and interventional radiology.

Despite a large number of studies available from European countries, limited information exists about clinical indication-specific DRLs for x-ray medical imaging, which the commission recognized and, thus, prompted it to approve the EUCLID project.
