Philips unveils Affiniti cardiac echo scanner at ESC

Philips Healthcare is choosing the 2014 European Congress of Cardiology (ESC 2014) in Barcelona to debut its new work-in-progress Affiniti cardiology ultrasound system.

Affiniti represents Philips' new bid to meet the needs of high-volume clinical environments efficiently and reliably, the company said. It handles a wide array of imaging tasks and delivers high image quality thanks to a new transducer. Its ergonomic design allows a greater patient volume to be seen in less time, the company said.

Features include Philips' PureWave transducer technology, which delivers high image quality with little or no need for adjustment, enabling higher patient volumes. The scanner's anatomical intelligent ultrasound feature recognizes and quantifies anatomy, making it easier and faster to perform exams, Philips said.

Finally, the scanner is equipped with a range of automation tools such as AutoSCAN, Auto Doppler, and SmartExam to reduce the number of steps required to perform exams, again enhancing workflow, Philips said.

The scanner is not for sale yet, but is expected to be available in several countries later this year, with a U.S. debut scheduled for 2015, Philips said.

ESC 2014 is taking place in Barcelona 30 August to 3 September.
