ESC: Italian earthquake won't affect congress

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has moved to reassure attendees the ESC's annual scientific congress, which begins this Saturday in Rome, will take place as scheduled.

ESC's confirmation comes in response to the earthquake that struck central Italy on the morning of 24 August. The hardest-hit regions are approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Rome in Umbria, Lazio, and Marche.

There is no damage to congress facilities or any other structures in the Italian capital, according to the ESC statement.

More than 32,000 cardiovascular professionals from around the world are expected to attend the five-day conference, with a special visit from Pope Francis.
