Philips launches surgical navigation technology

Royal Philips, the parent company of Philips Healthcare, announced that it has launched an augmented-reality surgical navigation technology.

The surgical navigation system features high-resolution optical cameras mounted on a flat-panel x-ray detector to image patients. It then combines the external view captured by the cameras with the internal 3D view of the patient acquired by the x-ray system to construct a 3D augmented-reality view of the patient's external and internal anatomy, according to Royal Philips.

Results of the first preclinical study, a partnership between Philips, Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, have been published in the journal Spine, the company said.
