By AuntMinnieEurope.com staff writers

July 26, 2012 -- The European Commission and the Association of Imaging Producers & Equipment Suppliers (AIPES) have created the European Observatory on the Supply of Medical Radioisotopes.

The organization is designed to develop and recommend strategies and policies for a sustainable and secure supply of medical radioisotopes in the European Union.

The group's strategic objectives are listed below:

  • To support a secure molybdenum-99 (Mo-99)/technetium-99m (Tc-99m) supply for the medium and long term.
  • To give the Mo-99/Tc-99m supply issue high political visibility in international and national institutions.
  • To encourage the creation of a sustainable economic structure for the Mo-99/Tc-99m supply chain through supporting the implementation of the full-cost recovery methodology developed by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency's High-level Group on the Security of Supply of Medical Radioisotopes.
  • To establish periodic reviews of the Mo-99/Tc-99m supply chain and capacities.
