Proton Partners to open 3 centers in U.K.

The U.K. is getting its first three proton-beam therapy centers. Cardiff-based Proton Partners International is opening treatment centers in Cardiff, London, and Northumberland by 2017, and the first (Cardiff) will be operational next year.

The centers will be available for National Health Service (NHS) patients from England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as for medically insured private patients and self-paying patients.

The Cardiff center will also provide conventional radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and supportive care. In the future, Proton Partners International intends to develop proton therapy centers in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The U.K. government is to create two NHS proton-beam therapy units that will open in 2018.
