Karolinska Institutet of Solna, Sweden, has received a grant of 1.6 million euros ($2.1 million U.S.) from the Stichting af Jochnick Foundation.

The funds from the Amsterdam-headquartered foundation will be used for research of the fundamental causes of diabetes. The grant will make it possible to use unique methods to study how the release of insulin is regulated in living organisms.

The research program will be headed by Dr. Per-Olof Berggren, a professor of experimental endocrinology in the department of molecular medicine and surgery.
