Henrik Thomsen unveils contrast media guidelines

An updated review of the most important issues regarding adverse reactions by patients to contrast agents was published on 17 August as an article in press in the European Journal of Radiology.

The update on contrast media safety incorporates European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) guidelines on contrast-induced nephropathy and also guidelines for reducing the risk of nephrogenic system fibrosis, and includes other state-of-the-art recommendations, according to Dr. Henrik Thomsen, director of the department of diagnostic sciences at the University of Copenhagen.

Thomsen headed the committee that updated guidelines published in 2003 by the ESUR. An outspoken critic of GE Healthcare's gadolinium-based contrast agent Omniscan as being a possible cause of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, Thomsen was sued for libel in December 2009 by the company. Both parties settled out of court in February 2010.
